Celtic Music in North Carolina: Originals Echo the Scottish Tradition

Highland Echoes brings the rich soundscape of Scotland to life in the heart of North Carolina through a powerful blend of original Celtic music and traditional Scottish rhythms. This one-of-a-kind soundtrack bridges centuries of Scottish heritage with modern musical artistry, connecting audiences across the Carolinas—and beyond—to the enduring spirit of the Highlands.

Original Celtic Music Created in North Carolina

At the heart of Highland Echoes is a collection of original compositions that echo centuries-old traditions while introducing fresh, innovative interpretations. The music is the brainchild of Jennifer Licko, award-winning Celtic artist and 2014's Celtic Album of the Year winner, alongside Patrick Mangan, the renowned former fiddle soloist and musical director of Riverdance.

Together, they’ve created a musical experience that fuses authentic Scottish roots with the creative spirit of North Carolina, showcasing the global journey of Celtic culture through sound.

A World-Class Celtic Music Production Team

The Highland Echoes soundtrack is elevated by top-tier talent in music production:

  • Bob Noble (UK), an accomplished British producer and keyboardist, oversaw the musical arrangement and direction.

  • Mike Paxman, an internationally respected producer, handled the mixing and mastering for crystal-clear sound quality.

  • Patrick Mangan recorded the fiddle parts with masterful precision, drawing on over a decade of experience with Riverdance.

  • Cassandra Calo, a gifted Scottish-style piper, added atmospheric depth with her haunting melodies.

  • Jennifer Licko's vocals bring warmth, emotion, and storytelling to every note.

Adding a powerful rhythm section, Brazilian percussionist Dr. Daniel Gohn, an international performer and professor at The University of Sao Carlos, contributed dynamic drumming that ties the project together with vibrancy and authenticity.

A Musical Journey Through Scottish and North Carolina History

This soundtrack is more than just music—it’s a cultural narrative. The themes explore:

  • The migration of Scottish people to the Carolinas, Ireland, Nova Scotia, and Argentina.

  • The legacy of Scottish traditions in North America, especially in North Carolina’s Celtic heritage communities.

  • Folklore and history, including the Witch Trials (“Woman of Mystery”), the Selkie myth (“The Selkie Girl”), and religious transformation in “These Islands.”

Featured Original Celtic Tracks

  • “An Dannsa Gaidhig” – A vibrant instrumental composed by Jennifer Licko. This dance tune opens the show with strathspey and reel rhythms, highlighted by a 30-second vocal instrumental in Scots Gaelic mouth music (puirt a beul).

  • “Hector” – A moving ballad about the fabled ship that carried Scottish emigrants to Canada. Featuring Jennifer’s evocative vocals and Cassandra Calo’s stirring pipes, it tells of hope and hardship in a foreign land.

  • Reimagined hornpipes and jigs – Traditional forms are given modern flair, showing how Scottish music adapts and evolves while staying rooted in history.

Scottish Legends

The Selkie Girl

Lyrics and Music by Jennifer Licko
Produced by Bob Noble and Mike Paxman

This is a unique original song inspired by the legend of the Selkie from Scotland. The powerful melody and vivid imagery transport the listener to the country's rocky shores and evoke emotion as they explore the mystical creature's ancient story. The dreamy strings, angelic harp sounds, and emotive lyrics combine to create an unforgettable song that will move and captivate the listener.

The captivating legend of the Scottish Selkie has inspired countless stories through the ages. This mysterious creature is a seal that can shed its skin and take human form when it arrives on land. Such stories often revolve around the Selkie falling in love with another human, starting a family, and living a full life on land. However, the Selkie's longing for the sea often overtakes them, and they struggle to find their seal skin which has been hidden, stolen, or even burnt by someone who doesn't want them to leave and return to the sea.

History of Scotland

These Islands

Lyrics and Music by Jennifer Licko
Produced by Andy Karg

“These Islands” as the title of the song refers to Ireland, Scotland, England, and Wales. Licko embarked on a daring quest to capture the essence of the profound and tumultuous history of the Ulster Plantations. With thunderous drums and blazing bagpipes, she composed a piece as majestic as the weight the subject carried. This was no mere chapter in the annals of time; it was a chapter etched with indelible significance. Licko knew the melodies had to echo the depths and complexities of the Scots and Irish coexisting amidst turbulent tides. The lyrics, "like rocks and stones collide, the water wears me down," convey a powerful message, evoking the unwavering resilience of the Scots and Irish amidst their struggles against the relentless pressure exerted by the British, akin to the ceaseless erosion of objects in the vast sea.

Tribute to our past

Cumha na Saorsa

Music by Cassandra Calo from Highland Echoes
Produced by Bob Noble and Mike Paxman

Cumha na Saorsa (Direct Translation from Scots Gaelic: Lament of the Freedom) is a tribute to the Scottish patriots who battled the British in the fight for Scotland’s freedom in the 18th century.

The British outlawed the playing of bagpipes and the wearing of tartan, as well as the use of Gaelic, and despite these efforts, Scottish music and culture has persevered through the years and is a symbol of Scottish strength and courage in the face of adversity.
